Crown Reduction

BEFORE

Crown Reduction Before

AFTER

Crown Reduction After

The ends of all branches are reduced, in length, back to suitable ‘growth points’ (side branches). As a result the entire tree crown is reduced, in size and volume, whilst retaining the natural shape of the species.

Crown Thinning

BEFORE

Crown Reduction Before

AFTER

Crown Thinning

Branches are removed from within the tree crown in order to make it consistently less dense. The natural shape of the tree is unaffected, but the ‘Sail Effect’ (wind resistance) is reduced and more light allowed to filter through.

Crown Lifting

BEFORE

Crown Reduction Before

AFTER

Increasing the gap between ground level and the crown. This is normally achieved by removing the lowest branches of the crown to a specified height.

Tree Felling

Crown Reduction Before

Tree Surgery – Causing a tree to fall under control by carefully making a series of cuts at the base of the trunk.

Sectional Felling

Crown Reduction Before

Carefully dismantling a tree in small sections. This operation is usually undertaken using heavy duty rigging equipment, lowering ropes and skilled branch removal techniques.

Dead Wooding

Crown Reduction Before

The removal of dead or dying branches usually for safety and aesthetics. Larger dead branches can be safely retained (in order to provide habitat for birds and insects) by reducing their length and weight.

Langley Horticulture Supply & Plant the Following Trees & Hedging:

Langley Horticultural Services are able to offer a supply and planting service, for all varieties of hedging.  Please see our range of available hedging listed below.

When to plant a hedge

Evergreen and semi-evergreen hedging: Early autumn is ideal for hedging plants such as box, privet (semi-evergreen) and yew. However, they can be planted at any time from late autumn until late winter

Deciduous hedging: Plant beech, hawthorn and hornbeam any time from leaf fall. This is typically from mid-autumn until late winter

In all cases, planting is best delayed until the soil can be worked easily, especially if the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

When to Trim Hedges

New hedges require formative pruning for their first couple of years after planting. Formative pruning is usually carried out in winter or spring.

After this, maintenance trimming is carried out, usually once a year for informal hedges and twice a year for formal hedges. Some formal hedges may need three cuts a year.

Maintenance trimming is generally carried out between spring and late autumn (October).

Maintenance Trimming

Clip to the desired shape one to three times during summer, until late autumn (most hedges can be clipped into October), when trimming should cease to reduce the risk of bare patches.

Please Note:

It’s best practice when undertaking work on garden hedges check that there are no birds nesting, as it is an offence under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 to damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built.

With conifer hedges, make sure you do not trim them after August, as this can encourage bare patches to develop in the hedge. Most hedges can be safely pruned into late autumn (October).

Boundary hedges can quickly grow to overhang the street or pavement. These should be trimmed to ensure they do not impede access by pedestrians. Even regularly trimmed hedges can gradually get bigger over the years; most deciduous and broadleaved evergreen hedges can be successfully renovated but some (including many conifer hedges) are best replaced when overgrown.
